
Who was Dr. Gilbert L. Porter ?
1909-1995

Our school, Dr. Gilbert L. Porter Elementary "The School of Discovery", is named after one of Miami's outstanding educators.
Dr. Gilbert Lawrence Porter was born in Baldwin City, Kansas. He earned a Bachelor's degree in chemistry from Talladega College; a Master's degree in educational administration from the University of Michigan and his Ph. D. from Ohio State University.
He began his professional career as a teacher of Science in the public schools of Florida. He was the first full-time paid executive secretary of the Florida State Teachers Association. When that organization merged with the Classroom Teachers Association he moved to Miami as the Special Assistant to the Superintendent of Dade County Schools. He retired from that position in 1973.
Dr. Porter was married to Willie Pearl Keller. They have two children: Mrs. Laurestine Porter Hamm, a media specialist at Arcola Lakes Elementary and Albert Wesley who is the owner of The Porter Oil Company.
